Up to £50k funding available for transport manufacturers in the West Midlands

Author: Sarah Barsby, Coventry University Services Ltd

Date: 22/05/2024 07:53

West Midlands has been identified as a key region in the UK for potential growth in advanced manufacturing. Innovate UK has opened a funding round to support the West Midlands’ transport sector as it transitions away from fossil fuels towards clean technology. Now in its second year, 20 small and medium enterprises will be selected to join a six-month, challenge-led accelerator, where they will receive up to £50K to trial their solution which must be matched in-kind (e.g. labour time/materials.) The challenges in the accelerator are built around rail and automotive manufacturing, along with related supply chains. The accelerator also provides bespoke technical and commercial support, as well as networking and showcasing events to connect the firms with industry and financial partners. The challenges are: Challenge 1: Clean and Efficient Vehicle Manufacturing and Assembly The focus areas are. Minimising scope 3 emissions in the production of sustainable vehicles Improving the integration of sustainable vehicles into the circular economy Addressing a major barrier in the adoption of clean transport technologies, i.e. the cost of acquisition and operation. Challenge 2: Design or production of cost-effective solutions for a clean transportation infrastructure The objective is to contribute to the development of mass rail-based transit systems that are accessible to everyone, fostering a unified public transport network that is clean, reliable and sustainable. Rail solutions are sought that either introduce a brand-new infrastructure approach, or centre on retrofitting existing infrastructures to make them greener. Challenge 3: Future Fuels: Produce, transport, or store alternative fuels such as hydrogen or biofuels Applicants are invited that are actively involved in the production, transportation, or storage of biofuels or hydrogen within the West Midlands. These efforts should aim to make alternative fuels readily available to end-users, thereby supporting the region’s sustainable energy ecosystem. Challenge 4: Open Challenge The Open Challenge is designed to foster a wide array of sustainable solutions. Beyond the accelerator’s main three challenges, the Clean Futures programme welcomes applications that contribute to sustainable transport and clean manufacturing in general. To apply for any of these four challenges, you must be an SME with: A UK company address An innovative technology or solution with a Technology Readiness Level of 5 or above Demonstratable alignment to one of the challenges being addressed by this programme The ability to travel for face-to-face meetings and events in the West Midlands Development, testing and/or demonstration of your solution is feasible using the BCIMO or Coventry University test site facilities In-kind match funding contribution of £50k (e.g labour, materials) Solution must have demonstrable impact within the West Midlands https://cp.catapult.org.uk/opportunity/clean-futures-accelerator-2/

Sustainable travel platform secures £1.2m in new funding round

Author: Sarah Barsby, Coventry University Services Ltd

Date: 13/05/2024 11:55

A travel management platform has secured £1.2 million in new funding to boost its software and grow its sales function. Birmingham-based You Smart Thing has struck the deal with the West Midlands Co-Investment Fund alongside other investors. The company aims to address sustainable travel solutions for destinations, venues and live events by generating personalised, low-carbon travel plans. It suggests alternative travel routes to visitors and details the carbon footprint of each option. The company said its products addressed inaccurate travel advice and in particular aimed to help disabled travellers and those in large groups. It has worked with clients such as Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Coventry City of Culture Trust, Transport for Greater Manchester and the Rugby League World Cup. Visitor travel accounts for around 70 per cent of the total carbon footprint for live events globally and, by capturing data on travel demand, modal choice and routes, You Smart Thing can enable venues to enhance logistics, security management and communications. This fresh round of investment will enable the company to enhance its software to help local authorities reduce region-wide carbon emissions in line with their own objectives.

Coventry University helping to create technology to charge electric vehicles as they drive

Author: Sarah Barsby, Coventry University Services Ltd

Date: 13/05/2024 08:58

Coventry University is contributing to a pioneering new technology to enable recharging of electric vehicles as they drive on power-enabled roads. The technology is one of six innovations proposed by the Key Cities Innovation Network (KCIN) in “Civic Partners in Net Zero”, a collection of peer-reviewed studies detailing innovative ways in which universities are working with their local communities to achieve net zero targets. KCIN co-ordinates universities associated with the cross-party group of 27 Key Cities across England and Wales – including Coventry – which is the largest grouping of urban authorities in the UK outside London. The studies, selected not only for local relevance but also their potential for replicating in other places, range from tech innovation and policy development to engaging local communities with climate science. Local action on climate change was flagged as a priority by Key Cities last year, when they commissioned a study tracking the performance of local authorities across a range of climate indicators. Coventry’s innovation focuses on the city’s longstanding expertise in automotive. Dynacov – short for “dynamic charging of vehicles” – uses dynamic wireless transfer technology to establish an automatic connection between subscribing vehicles and metal coils fitted below the road surface to recharge the vehicles’ batteries as they pass over and bill them for the energy consumed. Even as cities move towards car-free centres, this approach is seen as a great way of keeping buses and goods deliveries moving without harming the environment. Funded by National Grid Electricity Distribution and building on dynamic wireless transfer technology prototyped by ElectReon, Dynacov is a feasibility project by Coventry University and Coventry City Council, which is leading the project, in collaboration with Cenex, focussed on a section of Kenilworth Road at its junction with the A45. Current targets for phasing out non-zero emission HGVs by 2040 don’t specify a technology or infrastructure for decarbonisation and it is hoped this project will attract government support and funding for the next stages to trial an effective solution to that as yet unanswered question. Dynacov demonstrates the benefits of universities and local authorities sharing a common vision for the sustainable future of our cities and then having the agility to work in a collaborative and timely manner with industry stakeholders to effect positive change. Kevin Vincent, Director of Coventry University’s Centre for Connected and Autonomous Automotive Research Innovation will be one of the ways we tackle the causes and consequences of climate change, and innovation is something we are very good at here in Coventry, especially in the transport sector which is in our DNA. It is great to be collaborating with Coventry University and Cenex to show how roads can be used to charge vehicles as they pass by and solutions like this will enable the transition to electric vehicles to happen more quickly. Councillor Jim O’Boyle, Coventry City Council’s cabinet member for jobs, regeneration and climate change
